Re: Can our friends in media highlight this?

i for one have never been a worshipper of the army and know first hand that they can molest and rape and pilfer and torture. some army men are completely dehumanised. there is nothing wrong in speaking the truth.

i also know from my own coverage of disasters that people exaggerate. they do it because they think unless they give exaggerated accounts nobody will believe them or sympathise with them. i have seen relief material being sold for pennies after some natural calamities. so this does not surprise me.

the driver may have exaggerated. but these things quite possibly happened. and more will happen when the people go back to their villages, where all land records are now lost, where fences and markings are lost. in places there will be water where there was land. in places there will be land where there was once a river. the bihar government ceased to exist many years ago. whichever party rules, there is no government. arvind das had not for nothing called bihar a 'state of the mind'.

but anubha's tortured question, 'what have we done to deserve such a catastrophe,' really comes from a heart that beats and feels. i respect her, i respect that feeling. i feel helpless just like she does, but anubha, you know as well as i do that unless we go out to organise and stick out our necks we cannot really ask this question. we must ask what we did not do that brought us this catastrophe. and many more are waiting to happen.

take heart. help your driver and some of his friends at the individual level. charity is not a solution, we all know, but it should not be used as an excuse to sit back and do nothing. we could all reach into our pockets and help one person, one child. don't give money to any NGO or CM's or PM's relief fund. just choose one person, the first who comes along and help.
