RE: The media coverage of the disturbances in both Orissa and Karnataka
How depressing to read your piece! To think that the principle according to which you want to `balance' your approach is the principle of revenge/ retaliation. This ancient principle was at least courageous in that it took on the perpetrator of the crime, and not some innocents who happen to be easy prey for thugs protected by pliant or complicit administrations. In today's world even in this form revenge is unacceptable as justice and law replace it as the guiding principle for resolving differences between different sections of society. This precludes recourse to force and violence - the most extreme form of taking the law into one's own hands - because you dislike another's point of view, or even if you feel aggrevied or exploited by others. Democratic processes and legal redressal of grievances are the civilised way, and no one can defend or try to justify mob terror tactics against those who some discontents may identify as `culprits'. If we give in their perverted reasoning, then `God help us', for we will have surrendered our right and ability to help ourselves.
