Joker-in-charge of Chattisgarh police- please find details of a meeting at Berkeley, where the esteemed DG of Chattisgarh participated and got his comeuppance.

 

BTW, it is becoming clear that the Chief Secretary and other senior bureaucrats in Orissa Government are RSS sympathizers, and that partly explains the continuation of violence against the christians in Kandhmal and the apparent inability of the police and adminsitration to control the situation. It seems that the situation may have changed with the approntment of a new DG, because we heard that for the first time, RSS and Bajrang Dal instigators have been arrested- they had been left free till now to break the rule of law. Reports are that efforts by the Chief Secetary to get the DG, Police to go slow on the arrests have been rebuffed by the DG. Also threats of imposition of President's rule has also helped to break the sleep of Nabin Pattanaik.

 

The arrests of the instigators of the violence have incensed the BJP, and expect that in the next few days there would be major demands for "release" of innocent persons who have been arrested, and probably for the removal of the DG and the local SP.

 

The situation is extremely tense - and I am getting reports that large number of dalit youths, disgusted with the inability of the Government to protect them, may join the Maoists. This, in my view at least, will be disastrous, and bring in a civil war like situation. Dalit Christians, given that they are not being allowed back to their homes and villages without reconversion by the VHP and Bajrang dal, are also becoming increasingly deseperate.

 

Hopefully the arrests would help the violence die down.
