Re: Singur and Nano
Being a small industrialist myself, and free of communist and political
prejudices, I see this issue in a different light.

First, the project belongs to Tatas. They did not come on their own.
They WERE INVITED TO BENGAL. They were promised heaven and were taken
in a golden chariot. It was Buddha's clear drift away from self
defeating communism. But it was not to be. He was not laid low not by
his own party as expected but, by another party !

I am often amused at the 'farmer's plight' kind of comments. Everyone
knows that nine times out of ten, a farmer will fly to greener pastures
if the situation is right. The pride in Agriculture has left the farmer.
In Tamilnadu, most of the construction workers are farmers and actual
landowners. The construction trade offers somewhere around Rs 175.00
for a helper and, worse oral and physical abuses by higher ups are very
common. They will suffer all this while living in city slums (a
euphemism for hell on earth) but never return to their trade where they
have dignity.

If the Tatas were given green land with irrigation, then it is wrong. A
factory must be in wasteland only as a rule. I wonder whether the
foundries and electroplating units were also located inside the same
complex. if it was so, it is better the project got closed.

Further, I am scared of the prospect of small cars clogging the
country's roads. But the bigger problem is pollution. When a person used
a bike with a mileage of 65 KM/litre, now he has to buy this car with a
mileage of 20 km ! - a three fold increase in consumption.

I see the efforts to reduce the tariffs on this product and the project
itself to make the nano into a cheapest car as self defeating. The
subsidy comes from people and the people are fooled to believe that they
are buying real cheap.

The communists are on a Trisankhu state here. They cannot spit and
cannot swallow. If they act as per tata's policies and look at nano,
it is supporting upper class. If they see truth in the farmer's (and
Mamta's) version, they will be called anti- reforms which cloak they
want to shed. Now they can do neither. Catch 22 !

Venkat
