3-day annual tribal fest Parab kicks off in Koraput
This is what great about India. We still have tribals, tribal culture,
tribal traditions. Like this there are 1000s of communities having
their own culture and religions, which have been living peacefully and
flourishing for thousands of years in India. A direct comparison can
be made to the tribal cultures in Americas, Africa Australia where
they have been decimated to a large extent. So what is the difference
between tribals survival in India and other countries.

Hence we still find tribal cultures able to celebrate
their festivals as illustrated below;

Lalmohan Pattanaik | Jeypore

BHUBANESWAR | Tuesday, November 18, 2008

The three-day grand State-level tribal festival — Parab 2008 — was
inaugurated on Sunday by Energy Minister Surjya Narayan Patro. While
addressing the gathering, he stressed on preserving of tribal culture
and development of tourism in the district for socio-economic
development of the tribals.

Patro said that both the Central and State Governments are providing
sufficient funds for an all-round development of the district under
different schemes. He attributed the reason for the district being
underdeveloped to the lack of education among tribals.

For the development of the tribals, the Naveen Patnaik Government has
introduced a law regarding rights of the tribals on minor forest
produce, and 56 such produce are to be procured and sold by the
tribals, which is a first of its kind in the State, he added. Patra
also assured to provide rights of record of tribals on the
Podu-cultivated land.

He said Parab earned a separate entity in the entire country and
become the second name for Koraput as people have come to know that
Parab means Koraput.

Koraput MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, speaking as the guest of honour,
expressed concern that after so many years of celebrations of Parab no
hidden talents from the area could get the opportunity to participate
at the State and national levels. The organiser should take care of
this. He also said that there is need to develop ecotourism to
strengthen the tribal economy.

Zilla Parishad president Ashok Kumar Pangi, another guest of honour,
said Parab is a pride of Koraput, which earned recognition for the
district in the world. Lt General Narayan Mohanty, who belongs to
Dumuriput near Padmapur in the district, was felicitated with Parab
Sabari Samman, while other eminent personalities of the district like
Chandana Roul, J Hema Rao, G Sanjeev Kumar, Purnachandra Bidika and
Siba Dhangada Majhi were felicitated with Parab Prathibha Samman.
Minister Patro also released the Parab 2008 souvenir.
