Re: I wouldn't have interacted with you in English and use internet, if my ancestors had not embraced Christianity.
The question put by Mr. Sanjay has no relevance because whether a
tribal man is christian or non-christian they live together in a
village as a community and not based on any religious faith. To
understand the whole situation one must visit a tribal village for a
month or so then put question like sanjay has put.Religion have
never divided the tribal community. Though, I was not born and
brought up in Jharkhand but I find that many of my relatives living
in our ancestoral villages are still not converted to christianity.
No one need a authority to express his views and neither by
expressing ones view point he becomes representative a converted
christians. We are tribals and maintaining our identity as a tribal
is our first priority. Every tribal community even prior to adopting
any religion use to worship God though in some other form. The
subject headlines may not be relevant to this discussion but
conversion to any religion for gaining some benefit may be wrong
unless a conversion first take place in his heart. At this point of
time one can say that decades back tribals were poor so they were
lured to convert to christianity but what about those in cities and
elsewhere who are highly qualified(even rich) but converting to
other religions. I was viewing a TV programme where the focus was on
a Foreign National who came to india, settled in H.P. married a girl
there and adopted hinduism of his own will. There is a prominent
leader working for Schedule Caste community but embrassed Budhiesm.
I feel if someone feel comfortable with any religion he should have
freedom to adopt and practice that religion of his choice. I would
like to share one instance. One of my neighbour was frequently
visiting me and asking me what he will get if he become a christian.
I said my church(catholic) will not give you a single pie. He
didnot believe this and cited a few examples of some people who
became christian and got some amount and some thing also. I told him
that there are many other denomination other than catholic church
and it is difficult for me say to which denomination they belong. I
told this instance to my parish priest who replied me " it is better
he doesnot become a catholic." This is a incident of a City like
Delhi. If someone seek to convert to any religion on such
consideration, I would certainly this that suh people are not
faithful to God.On this count I agree with Sanjay that faith for
personal gain is not the primary objective of following religion but
at the same time no one in the tribal region of chotanagpur deny
that it is christian missionaries who have provided education and
health care to the poor tribal people. Therefore, I feel whoever
initiated this discussion and gave a subject title"I wouldn't have
interacted with you in English and use internet, if my ancestors had
not embraced Christianity" is right in his place. If someone living
in darkness is shown light by a person, he must be grateful to that
person.
