Boy pays heavy price for Rs-5 bread

Beatings, branding with hot iron on legs, hands and face. These are the punishments a housewife meted out to a 13-year-old servant boy just because he spent Rs 5 to buy bread, as he was hungry. Now, with his head and hands heavily bandaged, he is unable to even eat.

Following the incident, the Sanjaynagar police have booked cases under Sections 3 and 4 of the Anti-Child Labour Act and Sections 324 and 342 of the IPC against Latha, the wife of Basavaraj Nadagouda, younger brother of Sindhanur MLA Venkat Rao Nadagouda.

The victim—Vijay Kumar of Javalgera village at Sindhanur in Raichur district—has been handed over to Bala Mandira on Hosur Road. He will be produced before in the court on Monday.

Vijay Kumar came to Bangalore two and a half years ago to work at Basavaraj's flat in Central Excise Layout, Sanjaynagar.

Basavaraj treated Vijay well, but Latha harassed him often. On Saturday evening, Latha asked Vijay to buy some goods from a nearby shop. The boy went to the shop and  bought the goods. The shopkeeper returned him a balance amount of Rs 5 which Vijay used to buy bread as he was hungry. When he returned home, Latha asked him for the balance amount. When the boy said he had bought bread with the money, a fuming Latha beat him black a nd blue and hit him on the head with a piece of wood several times and put him in a room.

Flees to hospital

After some time, she branded him with a hot iron on his legs, hands, stomach and face. Vijay managed to escape from the house and rushed to MS Ramaiah Hospital where he was treated under a medico legal case. Later, the police took the boy to Bala Mandira.

Vijaykumar told this paper that Latha used to harass him ever since he came to work in their house. His father, Veerappa, works in a hotel at Sindhanur.

HUSH-UP BID

As usual, the Sanjaynagar police tried to hush up the matter. On Sunday, around 10:30 am, Siddalingaiah (2347), a station head constable, took Vijayakumar from Bala Mandira and returned only in the late evening.
The timings are recorded in the diary. But, why did he take the boy out? Where was the boy during that period?
The police and the Balamandir officials have no answe
