Re: Indian police have arrested a man for writing a book blaming Hindus for dead
Apropos Pravin Khare's remarks on the above subject.
I have three things to say: First, why should a specific community be the responsibility of one of its religious institutions? We are a secular democracy and every citizen has rights that are enshrined in the constitution among other official documents. On what basis are Christians (lumped together despite the many sects) being implicitly denied this?

Second, I think that such communal ideas have caused enough damage and are dehumanising: they disable the one who holds them from recognising the equal humanity of those whom he is prejudiced against. They also incite violence

Third, there are massive economic and social problems which are being aggravated every day by a callous and anti-poor government and a very hawkish corporate world. Hate speech and warmongering only serves to distract from these very real issues.

It is time we began to deal with these ourselves and pressure the state to deal with these adequately.

Karen
