Dear All, Its nearly 3 weeks since Police firing on Adibasi protesters killing at least one and injuring many others. There has been muted response to the whole incident. The belated Govt. response was half hearted and only few NGOs from outside came and went. But the local NGOs, social and political parties of all parties have been indifferent to the sad plight of the victims of the police firing. Even some of the injured have not reached hospitals for treatment for fear of arrest and imprisonment and some of them are likely to succumb to their injuries. The Govt. have lifted the Curfew from those areas but I am informed the local people have now imposed their own curfew banning govt agencies. It is rather sad state of affairs and people are suffering and no one seems to take any positive action to resolve the situation. From the points of view of human rights at least govt should institute a judicial inquiryy to find out the circumstances of police firing to reassure the local people and the victims and start negotiating with them to move forward the real issues of displacement, proper and adequate compensation, resettlement and long term stake holderships. I hope some local leaders or NGOs should take up these issues. Dhuni
