12/January/2009: Language is the main barrier for the tiny tots in the tribal dominated district of Sundargarh.
They speak in tribal dialect and school teaching is in Oriya.
Similarly Arithmetic standard of these students of Class I and II are equally poor.
With Language bar and weakness in Arithmetic school drop outs are found more in number.
So Madhu Sudan Padhi, known for his knowledge disseminating initiatives, initiated the move to "Learning to Read" (L 2 R) in order to arrest school drop outs.
Earlier Mr.Padhi as the State Project Director of OPEPPA took the lead in shaping the L2R program.
And as the RDC of Northern Division he persuaded the Public Sector Undertaking Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to support the pilot project of knowledge initiative.
Now the RSP is supporting the program as an initiative of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Mr.Padhi is at present Commissioner-cum-Secretary Higher Education of Orissa.
So the Brain Child of Mr Padhi "Learning to Read" launched in Rourkela Urban Local Body with support from RSP for a period of 3 years here on 11 January.
D Deb DGM CSR of the RSP has extended his support for the program.
Sharada Prasad Nayak MLA Rourkela inaugurated the program.
Sangram Keshari Swain DPC SSA Sundargarh, Kapilendra Mishra DI of Schools Rourkela graced the occasion.
The meeting was chaired by Ashok kumar Paikaray, Campaign Coordinator, Pratham.
All the councilors of Rourkela Municipality, School teachers,VEC functionaries and Volunteers attended the program.
Manoranjan Sahu Pedagogy Coordinator attended the meeting.
