As one watches helplessly, this strike by oil PSUs may threaten our fuel
situation. Their demands include more salaries.But, what are their real wages/salaries ?In 2002, I was in touch with
one of the oil companies for some business. I learned that the lowest
level technical staff, who should be a certificate holder in a trade
(ITI), was getting a salary of Rs 19,000.00 plus many many allowances
which included a strange house maintenance allowance of 40,000.00 per
annum. Now, in 2009 , the amount will be extraordinary. Also, I saw first hand, how the pump owners were afraid of these lowest
level employees. May be their support was required for adjustments in
measurements/calibration to fool the public. Naturally their own
personal consumption of fuel was free. The higher the officers, the pay difference was enormous. They enjoy
enormous clout. It is these officers that are striking work.
