Dear Prof Kalpana, Thought provoking article indeed! As far as I am aware the rules/laws against ragging have been there since 1975 or even before that . Thanks to Mrs Indira Gandhi who was supposedly the person who brought anti ragging law when I was admitted to medical college (1975) in a prestigious national medical college. Luckily for me I was not ragged as my cousin was there 2 years senior to me and I got protected. However one of my classmates got ragged and he in turn beat up the senior! There was no ragging that year. But as times went by ragging came up in milder forms. No one commited suicide nor was anyone beaten to death in our college but I agree with you since those days the number of people being killed/commiting suicide (nationally) is uncountable. It is a sad part of our culture in all our professional colleges all over India. It is high time this is stopped. Is the fault on the "seniors" alone. NO NO NO. The administrators indirectly are the perprators ! for example if a mega-rich/influential(politically) person's son commits this heinous crime of ragging do you think there are principals and dean who would dare to discipline the ragger ?? and this cycle goes on and on.
