Just writing to send out the news that Dr. Binayak Sen has been granted bail by the Supreme Court, today the 25th May 2009 (after two years of his arrest on 14th May 2007). The SC vacation Bench headed by Markandeya Katju did not even allow the Chhattisgarh Counsel to raise an objection and granted bail within one minute of taking up the case. One should remember that CG state had not heeded to the SC's earlier request to file the reasons for objecting his bail. Adv. Shanti Bhushan appeared on behalf of Dr. Binayak.
It is a great victory to justice, and all those who fought for it!!! Kudos to all the silent warriors who made this possible.

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) The Supreme Court Monday granted bail to civil rights activist Binayak sen, who has been lodged in a Raipur jail for over two years under unproven charges of links with Maoists in Chhattisgarh. The bail was granted by a vacation bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Deepak Verma. Former law minister Shanti Bhushan, appearing for Sen, had earlier pleaded to the court to accord an urgent hearing to Sen's bail plea in view of his precarious health condition.
A bench of Justice D.K. Jain and Justice B.S. Reddy had May 4 issued notice to the Chhattisgarh government on Sen's bail plea. While seeking its reply, the bench had also ordered the state government to provide him the "best possible medical aid" for the heart ailment he has been suffering from.
The Chhattisgarh government has booked Sen, the vice president of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) under the stringent anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, for his alleged links with Maoists. He was arrested May 14, 2007 and accused of acting as a courier for an alleged Maoist lodged in jail.
On May 4, former law minister Ram Jethmalani, appearing for Sen, had sought bail for him pleading that "the case against him has already been demolished in the trial court as all the material witnesses in the case have been examined" and none of them have deposed against him.
Jethmalani had contended that despite the case against Sen having been demolished, the Chhattisgarh High Court was not entertaining his bail plea.. [IANS]

Let's cheer. Finally, Dr. Binayak Sen was granted bail by the Supreme Court. Indeed its a great victory for the Human Rights Activists of India. Congrats to Dr. Sen, his family members and Human Rights Activist who fought a long battle against the state's suppression.
May 25, 2009 11:55 IST The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to civil rights activist Dr Binayak Sen, who has been lodged in jail for the last 22 months on charges of aiding and abetting naxalite activities in Chhattisgarh.
A bench comprising Justices Markandey Katju and Deepak Verma took up the matter on Monday after senior advocate Shanti Bhushan, on May 22, mentioned Sen's petition in which a notice was issued to the Chhattisgarh government. When the notice was issued, the apex court had asked the state government to provide medical aid to Sen, who has been suffering from heart ailment. Sen, who has been in custody since May 14, 2007, contended that there was no evidence against him to be booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The Chhattisgarh government accused Sen, who is the vice-president of the People's Union of Civil Liberties, of acting as a courier for an alleged naxalite who is in jail.
He also sought bail on medical grounds, saying he had been suffering from a heart ailment and needed treatment at the Christian Medical College, Vellore in Tamil Nadu. Sen, a doctor by profession, claimed that the chargesheet against him had already been filed and that he had remained in jail during the investigation of the case registered against him.
