COCONUT PROJECT IN THE PATTANAKKAD BLOCK PANCHAYAT WINS GLOBAL AWARD FOR GOOD PRACTICES

The UNDP-GEF-SGP supported project titled â€œPromoting Coconut-Based Agro-Ecosystem and Efficient Product Utilization for Augmenting On-Farm Income, Improving Quality of Environment and Conserving Natural Resourcesâ€� has won the Incentive Prize of â€˜2009 Ryutaro Hashimoto Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Awardâ€™. According to the formal announcement of APFED from Ishikava, Japan, the Prize involves cash component of US$2,000 and a Certificate of Appreciation. The prize winning project is being implemented by the Kochi-based NGO â€˜Peekay Tree Crops Development Foundationâ€™, headed by Mr.P.K.Thampan.

The project has been taken up for implementation in two phases. The first phase covered the period from 1 September 2004 to 31 December 2006 with the activities confined to Vayalar Panchayat within the Pattanakkad Block in Alappuzha District. The second phase is from 30 June 2007 to 31 December 2009 and during this phase the operational area of the project has been expanded to cover all the eight Village Panchayats falling within the Block. The total project cost for both the phases is Rs. 7,944,750 of which the share of UNDP-GEF-SGP is Rs. 3,750,000 and the balance being co-finance.

The APFED Secretariat assessed the worth of the project for the award on the basis of the recorded achievements in the different spheres of activities. The most noteworthy among these are the impacts on (i) Environment, (ii) Food production, Income and Employment, (iii) Community Driven Processing Initiatives, (iv) Womenâ€™s Welfare, and (v) Capacity Building of Rural Youth, and also the social impact of the (vi) Endowments instituted in the Vayalar Panchayat for the benefit of progressive farmers and the families of socially and economically poor coir workers for childrenâ€™s education, marriage and treatment of family members.
