Ramalinga Raju: The visionary facing unintended consequences of one decision
Note by: Kailash C. Joshi
It seems in the aftermath of the aborted merger of Satyam and the two Maytas companies; the entire coverage by the media has been on the highly damaging reactions of the financial markets. I will not debate here the merits or timing of the proposal. It seems clear that the unintended consequences of this bold proposal and the circumstances surrounding it were not anticipated by the Boards of the companies involved. That said I find it quite ironic and short sighted that the media and the business world have decided to entirely overlook the profound visions that have been brought to reality by Ramalinga Raju during the past fifteen years. I, among many others, have the highest regard for Raju and the companies and foundations that he has built. From my vantage point, and from people who know him professionally and personally, there are not many equals to Ramalinga Raju, in India and elsewhere, when it comes to creating business and philanthropic enterprises with unprecedented direct impact on millions of people. Here are some facts for consideration:
1. Go visit Byrraju Foundation (www.byrrajufoundation.org) and see how Raju's vision has lifted the lives of over a million people in rural Andhra Pradesh. The provision of health care, education, clean water and economic self sufficiency in the region of this foundation's domain are nothing short of miraculous. And yes, Raju and his family have provided most, if not all, of the funding for this exciting undertaking, which can also be scaled across India and other developing countries.
2. Take a close look at Raju's grand vision of EMRI or the 108 calling system and its impact on over 250 million people is some of the states of India. Raju conceived and launched it with a large donation of funds and land. His vision was and continues to be the establishment across India an emergency management system better than the US 911 systems. The remarkable thing is that Raju's vision and its timing have proved to be immaculate. With full operations in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and introductions in several other state this sophisticated system provides modern ambulance service, police and fire response to all 108 callers for no charge. This public private system exceeds the US 911 system in many features, including the cost of operations. The thousands of lives saved since EMRI was launched in 2005, and tens of thousands of victims who have received modern care are the testimonials to the profoundness of this vision. To me there is no equal of this "public good" vision for any nation launched by a single individual and his family.
3. Consider the tens of thousands of jobs created by Satyam globally in over three dozen countries with an extraordinary back bone of training programs for executives and professional in the IT services industry.
4. Look at the ambitious creation of the two Maytas enterprises in infrastructure and residential communities, respectively. These world class operations will continue to add significant value to the building of modern India, encompassing sophisticated construction technologies, smart buildings, and energy solutions etc. In writing this letter, all I ask the readers is to not let the Satyam happenings completely mask the vision, generosity and the genius of Ramalinga Raju. The institutions that Raju and his close family have created in a short time will continue to have a huge impact on India and millions of Indians for decades to come. The fruits of these enterprises are also reaching several other countries.
