Youth matters 'Involving Youth in Debate & Development' Who is thinking about Youth? Discussion on the matters of Youth has never been taken a pivotal space in the agenda of mainstream civil societies. Even though there are discussions but they are confined and more or less moving around the issues of unemployment as well as underemployment. Similarly in the government sphere the matter of youth is also limited in the scholarships and awards through the Ministry/Department of Youth Affairs & Sports in State & Country. But the existent problems of youth, their causes, consequences as well as the ways for their solution have seldom discussed, debated and solved. Youth consists of 41 percent of India's population and is moving forward. Many scholars termed this as "demographic disaster" which creates problem for economic growth of the States as well as of the Nation. But the fact is something different. The growing population of youth cannot be viewed as a curse. There are several instances throughout the globe where the youth have proved them as the boon for the countries and the most said is the example of China. Youth are not the "demographic disaster" rather they can become demographic dividend", if their power can be utilized in a proper manner and if only they have given enough scope to participate in the process of decision making in every sphere of life. In Orissa, the population of youth is also more than forty one percent. But the future of them in the state is not sheltered. It is said because the growing unemployment and underemployment among youth as well as lack of enough opportunities for them in mainstream political process. However it does not mean that every one belonging to the young age is running with a dilemma but a large propionate falls in to this. A critical view towards the matters of youth raises a series of questions. These questions are not only related with the unemployment of the youth but also the system of education designed for them. The questions are also related to increasing troublesome behavior among them as well as their victimization. Youth are also victimized of many other issues but they are rarely discussed. In the present context of economic slowdown, the young mass are the main suffers. There are also thousands of other questions. For instance, In Orissa there are around two hundred vacancies in Utkal University which is a premier institute to spread education among the youth. Now who suffers for this? It is not anyone else but the youth of the state. The definition of youth may be of many folds. But as per the age is concerned the youthfulness falls in to the age category of fifteen to thirty five. This is the age where the youth experiences the real life, society as well as social problems and develops the mindset. This is the time where the youth face many problems because of which s/he suffers in future. Most of all this is the time when the youth needs a scope to be a part of everything that is affecting his/her life, may it be education, may it be employment, may it be politics, different decision making process or may it anything else. In this context the question comes, does we have enough scope for taking a decision on the type of education we need, the type of political leadership we want or the type of development we perceive. Do we have enough scope and space to lead the nation with the capacity we have ? When it is the matter of youth the most frequent question comes to mind is "Who is thinking about Youth". Is it the Government, Is it the political leaders, is it the corporate houses or is it the development organizations or is it someone else? If so, what they think and how they materialize it? Let's have debate, let's identify together and let's do something for the Youth. Jitendra Rath, Bhubaneswar Sameet Panda, Nuapada Kumuda C.
