Sakina JNURRM is implementing the concrete aspect of development - what about the social/psychological? We all have to change - when was the last time I looked at an "untouchable' and - negative prejudiced thoughts crossed my mind
- I smiled and it was a condescending smile
- I helped and felt I was a great person
- I took food from his hand and it was hard to swallow
- I held his hand and was sure I'd been exposed to all the germs of the world.
We who are so called educated, must realise that the greatest wealth is the wealth of Human Resources. We set out to exploit natural resources and spend millions. What if we invested in recognising and transforming our attitude and the attitude of fellow beings. Let us begin by re-ducting our own minds - by putting positive prejudice into our minds and the minds of the children around us - Let us forget sentences from the past that repeat itself in our minds like a broken record - Naali ka kiraa etc. Let us clean our own bathrooms and realise the dignity in it. Then we will realise that it is the faeces that is dirty and germ filled and the human being cleaning it is respectful; dignified; - once he washes his hands, he can use it for putting food into his own mouth; he can sit beside his mom and wife and children - and they will not be covered with germs. Sakina Kalanga Bazar Educational Trust Ranchi India Ms. J.C. Dash A great article by Ms. Rupa Jha. Though this is not new to many of us, we need this sort of articles not to forget the contributions of every sector of the society. let's not go into caste but if one has do do this sort of job in order to keep the environment clean, lets recognise their work first. rightly mentioned in the article that we dont even open our doors to give them some water which they need most. and the government must provide the required equipments and jackets so that people like Rewa Ram, who has to do this work to feed the family, will not remove the blockage with bare hands and their body will not directly tackle the wastes. hope this sort of write ups and the response of so called civil society will help waking up the concerned authorities to do something positive in this regard. Ms. J.C. Dash, Bhubaneswar
