Cost of 11W CFL lamp is Rs.60 but each 11W lantern cost Rs.6000 or $150. But TERI franchises as admitted by TERI in its own news letter EXTORT Rs.10 per day for each Lantern from poor farmers for 10 years rated life (Rs.36,500). Grid power to light each lamp would consume and cost 180 units worth Rs.360. http://labl.teriin.org/labl_newsletter09_modi3.pdf ['The lanterns cost us between Rs 7 to Rs 10 per day. We use it to pluck the leaves, and clean and sort them before taking them to the market. The leaves remain fresh throughout', quoted a farmer who has been using the solar lantern from quite sometime now.] In 35 years TERI didn't learn that 70% of close to 750 billion units of electricity is generated by Coal Based Thermal Plant – 500 billion units annually. TERI intends to cover 400 million population or 80 million Lanterns each consuming 18 units in a year so energy required for these Lantern is just 1.5 billion units. Even most astonishing FACT is except Rajasthan most of un-electrified village are in Coal Mining states that have largely surplus electricity. 70 villages or 3500 Lanterns that committed Rs.2 crore in 24 hour long Greenathon is itself a FRAUD when average size of a village in India is 1400 that would need 280 to 350 Lanterns so actually only 10-12 villages were Lanterned with $0.4 million. All the 3500 Lanterns could not serve even one 10,000 plus village. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_states_and_territories_of_India_by_population [India has 593,731 inhabited villages and 72.2 percent of the total population resides in these rural areas. Of them 145,000 villages have population size of 500–999 persons; 130,000 villages have population size of 1000–1999 and 128,000 villages have population size of 200–499. There are 3,961 villages that have a population of 10,000 persons or more.] The money is good enough to install 500 MW of Thermal Power Plant at coal pitheads to augment power generation.. A single 500 MW Unit Generates between 3 billion to 4 billion units in a year. This generation is good enough to energize all 200 million CFL Lanterns at 50WA per day for 365 days. Even a 100 KW transformer for 1000 population would have provided regular power 24 hour supply to 1,50,000 population at 30% load factor- this is 100 average size villages. Annual budget of Bihar is Rs.14,000 crores or $3b can't it spare 5% of it one time cost (Rs. 700 crores) to repair & restore rural electric power. | Dear Singh Sahab, I like to differ on this one a bit you are right, when you say everyone is entitled to grid electricity.........the problem is exactly that.........villages don't get grid electricity for good 12-16 hours. you are right when you say that SUV people should switch to small cars............and that's what Al Gore should do ---- to tell Americans to implement such changes but you are not right that villages, in TODAY's date, eat before sunset & retire. that was true in earlier days.....nowadays they watch TV and do other stuff...............but gone are the days when villages used to just sit around a fire and idle away.. You compare TERI initiative with IFFCO LED. IFFCO LED cannot generate electricity. And more than that, villagers do not get electricity at all. so such an initiative will benefit villagers, at least to the extent that they will be able to live without darkness as you would know, their kitchens (at least in good % of villages) are dark..........and hence this will help and any such new technology is costly at the beginning. for example, hybrid cars are still not feasible as adoption increases, and with passage of time......prices decrease so cost of such implementations will not remain the same.............................with huge implementations, $150 could crash to , say, also $15 even at $30 billion 1% return per annum is decent compared to many other early generation technologies. Government will have to subsidize Solar Technology till it becomes more prevalent so that prices can fall. |
