Dear Friends,

 

the issues raised by Kalpana requires some honest search from us who have been able to access the higher education provided by the state and progressed in our lives. Dalits and Adivasis are good materials for policy documents and programme designs, but there comes a glass ceiling when they actually rise up to entering 'elite spaces' and demand their right to equality and equity. The recent article by Sukumar in EPW, currently teaching in Delhi University on his experiences in college is a short glimpse of what are the experiences of Dalit and Adivasi students in our centres of higher education and excellence. What Kalpana has mentioned in terms of her student's aspiration for being one of the first to get through the education for the sake of his village and community  is something I have encountered any number of times in the villages. I would also like to add that these brave people become role models for many others in the community to overcome the barriers they face. We do hope that it will become more fashionable to be understanding and supportive and build a society of equity, inclusion and justice than chasing the 'illusive merit' that we are so fond of doing.
