These lines ,you are quoting from QURAN are out of context.
When you quote , these lines , ala, Arun Shourie, you should always quote the next following lines , which invariably answers the questions you raise..
In a war, what do you expect a General to say to his infantry to boost their marale , ''lay down your arms in front of enemy''.?
He will say definitely '' get to vicotry--kill your enemies ''.but these words are in that context of those wars[1400 yeas ago] , in which the followers of islam in early days and residents of mecca were engaged [at that time residents of mecca had broken the peace treaty with followers of islam]
But the very next line says , if they repent , escort them to a place of safety , not just leave them alive.[read the next line of quotation of Quran]
Which General of modern era will do like this.?
Dr. Isaacs, these days it has become a fashion to say bad things to Islam , without knowing about the religion itself.
The irony is that many Muslims [may be more than 90%], themselves , donot know about their own religion , so what to expect from people from other faiths.?
Ask any Muslim , what is the meaning about ISLAM''[meaning PEACE]',and Judge their knowledge about their own religion, 90% will not be able to answer, so what to expect from peolple of other faiths.? How many of people, including Muslims , know that their is no word like'' holy war'' is mentioned in Quran but everbody now mentions ''jehad'' to be a 'holy war.' to be a product of Isam. How did it happen?
Media and some ignorant people invented this. Now who will tell peolpe, that ''jehad ''has nothing to be'' holy war.''
''Jehad'' simply means ''struggle against onself for betterment ''. You can be doing a 'jehad' if inspite of being a 'diabetic' you turn away a sweet dish from his dining table.
You are doing a jehad if donot engage in sex wih your wife against her wish. But just think how the meaning of a word has changed due to persistent spreading of misconception about Islam?
Islam , is being targeted from every corner because it is easy to do it, as Muslims , themselves donot know their religion , so who will come in defence of it.
As for the Talibans are concerned , this is a politico-socio-economic problem in the countries concerned . Everybody knows it but , but who have the courage to ay this?
Pakistan and Afghanistan ,-- are politically very unstable and volatile , their very weak politial heads, bad handling of political issues in their juridiction, their economies are in shattered state, very high unemployment , their literacy rate very low, their health status very vey bad , their geographical terrains, plus the cultivation of 'marijuana'-------------------- all has contributed to this problem of Talibans.I has nothing to do with Islam, but who will say this?
''Jazia ''is to be taken from people from another faiths in an islamic state, but , in this era , Dr. Issacs , can you name , any muslim country where jazia is enforce?
I have lived in Soudi Arabia [as a Govt. Doctor in Govt. hospital]], the only country in muslim world , which follows , ''sharia'', but do you now how many ''Indians '' are working over there? over 30 lakhs and 30% of these are not muslims.
I can say with my own experiences that in that country there is no discrimination [not to talk about our country !] as far as faith /color is concerened and in higher , medical consultants posts , mostly theere are not muslims, [Where from they will come--How many of Muslims are highly educated] . Are they being discriminated for any thing?
Ask them,.have they paid any jazia? There you have people from Phillipines , mosltly [100%] Christians , in Nursing, IT, Ask them are they paying any jazia? There are many places in world , where there ere religious restrictions for other faith and I mean to say it includes every faith. Can a muslim be allowed to open up a 'MOSQUE' in' Vatican City'
To, add to the agony, the mullahs, and religious heads are unable to withstand this onslaught on Islam , as they are medievally trained in madrsas and are away from the knowledge of modern science .
How many of the mullahs know English and Computer Litrate,? How many of them will ever have a chance to read this article of yours and respond? Dr. Issacs , Means , who are your targeted audiences?
Naturally , the people who have either no knowlegde about Islam [it includes Muslims too] or see Islam with suspicion due to continous spreading of mis/disinformation about Islam. What will be the impact ---more more people [including muslims themselves] will be mis/disinformed about Islam and more & more misconceptions. about Islam will be there and many ignorant muslims will keep silence , feeling guilty and defencive for not knowing about their own religion.
This will continue to happen till the religious leaders /madrasas will not come closer to science [This is the only solution --- education ---modernise the madrasas].
Unfortunately , this thing , I dont see happening , as madarasas , find difficult to change their curriculam due to pressure from within, and to add to the agony--the media--print/electronic and political leadeship in India have not proved themslves impartial at the time of crises ---whatever be the reasons..
