I am amused to see how some of us are sparing no effort to defend the corrupt. This is certainly shocking. When a Lalu Prasad Yadav is allegedly involved in fodder scam, the educated in the city who constitute the new upper caste in today's society, are upset and want the nation to punish such politicians. Because Lalu comes from the rural areas and doesn't below to the new upper caste. When the Supreme Court indicts Satish Sharma in corruption (the only politician to have been indictaed by the SC), the eductaed in the city go quiet. Perhaps they are not able to apprehend how come one amongst them could be brought to books. Similarly, Raju is not corrupt. Because he belongs to this new upper caste of India. And more importantly, we defend him because we are in one way or the other beneficiary of the same corrupt system. We hail the government when it bails out erring companies, write-offs the outstanding dues of the rich and elite, but we cry hoarse and on the top of our voice when the government provides what looks like a relief package for farmers. The Rs 60,000-crore write-off of bank dues for farmers was a much criticised decision by the same class of people. What is happening to us? Why have the morals of the society dipped so low? Why do we even have to view corruption from a blinkered vision? Why can't we demand the strictest punishment for all fraudsters, including politicians and industrialists? Deinder Sharma New Delhi
