Ranchi: Two days joint convention against displacement was organized on 9-10th of February, 2009 at HPDC, Ranchi by the Crej Jan Mukti Andolan with the support of 18 people's movements of Jharkhand. The prime objective of the convention was to bring all the people's movements in a platform, where joint action can be planned and executed against displacement induced by the development project in the state. The convention was jointly inaugurated by a Human Rights Activist Mr. Rajendra Sail, Convener of Adivasi Moolvasi Astitava Raksha Manch Ms. Dayamani Barla, Patron of CREJ & Convener of Bisthapan Virodhi Ekta Manchi Mr. K.C. Mardi, General Secretary of CREJ Jan Mukti Andolan Mr. Jerom G. Kujur and Secretariat member of NAFRE Ms. Lakhi Das by beating "Nagara" (a traditional drum of Adivasis).
The general secretary of CREJ Jan Jukti Andolan Mr. Jerom G. Kujur introduced the theme and objectives of the joint convention. The patron of CREJ and convener of Bisthapan Virodhi Ekta Manch Mr. K.C. Mardi while discussing on the theme said that the political parties are playing with the people. The dream of Jharkhand remained unfilled as the first government to rule the state was NDA, which has never shore up for the Jharkhand movement. Right from the beginning, the communal fascist forces are operating themselves with best of the technique and that along with planned manner in the state. The first Chief Minister of Jharkhand Mr. Babulal Marandi initiated to suppress the people's movement at Koel-Karo by showering round of bullets on the villagers who were attending the meeting against the displacement. Eight people gave up their lives. But the movement was geared up with great zest and zeal even after giving such forfeit.
He said that with the passage of time, along with the formation of every new Jharkhand government many MoUs were signed. In resistance people united together to protect their land, forest and water. Traditional rights along with the constitutional rights of the Adivasis are violated by the state government. In reply we must fight against it jointly.
Senior Journalist and the member of NAFRE Mr. Faisal Anurag while addressing the convention said that the people's movements which are running all over the state are not merely to stop the displacement but it will also provide a new political direction to the state. This kind of movements will surely have an effect on the people's representatives (PMs and MLAs) who have become the agents of corporate houses. The political scenario should be changed by the marginalized people of the state. The ruling parties have pillared them on a single agenda that is to full their mouths with the corporate money, shoot out the innocent people and allow the corporate people to have privileges on the natural resources. But we want happiness of our people and the big challenge ahead for us is that how to re-establish the community culture based society? For that we must jointly fight and step toward a new political direction with the local leaders.
Mr. Philip Kujur of Jharkhand Mines Area Coordination Committee (JMACC) said that only industrial development is not a single way of development. Now the political parties are also aware that people have united against displacement, which can cost them in the election. We are fighting to protect our resources and cases are being filed against us. But we have understood the drama therefore we will continue to fight. Now the political dimension will pave the way in people's development. We support all the movement against displacement in Jharkhand.
Convener of Adivasi-Moolvasi Astitava Raksha Manchi, Ms. Dayamani Barla said that we must unite all the movements if we want to win the battle against displacement. The problem is that we never felt the need to meet each other on a single platform. This will surely lead us to lose the movement some day. Are we in a position to take stance that we will not be controlled by unseen forces? People are fighting in the field but the intellectuals say that make a network. Are the intellectuals ready to unite themselves? But the reality is that intellectuals are not working to unite people's movement in the state level.
She said that Land is our, society is our and people are our therefore we must break those barriers which are not allowing us to unite. Our ancestors protected this land from poisonous snakes and scorpions but what is our contribution for our ancestrals' land? The people of all the movement must rethink for a new initiative to unite. Is it possible to unite all the movement like our ancestors did? We must take pledge to resurrect the history of Adivasi revolts. We must break our ego for creating a new history. We articulate ourselves as human beings and feel the need for comforts but our ancestors Birsa Muda, Sidhu-Kanhu struggled for us without food. All company have budget to lure youth in the name of CSR. Companies are gripping the youth in their hands by identifying their needs. One of the challenges is now to shield the youths from their effects and bring up the techniques to protect them. Potka movement should join hands with Torpa-Kamdara movement. Let's join hands to protect our land, forest, water and identity.
